Our Board Ask for Your Support During the 2018 Giving Challenge

Board Chair Kelly Kirschner

Board Member Kathy Schersten

The 2018 Giving Challenge, presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, is around the corner, and the UnidosNow Board is excited about the opportunity this event is bringing to our organization. Don’t miss Board Chair Kelly Kirschner, and Board Member Kathy Schersten, appealing messages letting you know why they are so passionate about UnidosNow and how you can impact our community by donating to our organization during this year’s Giving Challenge.

On May 1 and 2, noon to noon, you’ll have the opportunity to help our students and families continue to thrive by donating to the Giving Challenge, with each gift strengthened by The Patterson Foundation

What’s particularly exciting this year is that The Patterson Foundation will provide a 1:1 match for all unique donations—up to $100 per donor, per organization—without  a limit to the number of individual matches from unique donors (individuals with a personal credit/debit card) a nonprofit can receive during these 24 hours.

“Be the One” to support our students and families of UnidosNow.

Your donation is crucial to continue to make a difference because your contribution can help us establish the following programs in even more Sarasota and Manatee county schools. Stay tuned!

Mark your calendars for May 1st and 2nd, when you’ll have the opportunity to help our students and families continue to thrive by donating to the Giving Challenge, presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County—with each gift strengthened by The Patterson Foundation.

Your donation is crucial. We are asking for your support so more students and families can take advantage of our programs.

You can continue to make a difference because your contribution can help us establish the following programs in even more Sarasota and Manatee county schools:

  • Our Future Leaders Academy for Girls (FLAG), and our Future Leaders Academy for Middle Schoolers (FLAMS), which enable low-income elementary and middle-school students and their families learn about the path to higher education and develop critical skills.
  • Our Families Together Program equip parents of low-income, first generation students with the knowledge and skills for learning how to succeed in the education system in the United States by integrating indispensable life and language skills and building social capital.
  • Our Future Leaders Academy provides Manatee and Sarasota high-school seniors with the tools to successfully be admitted to college, as they pursue their academic and professional journey.
  • THE GANAS program informs and supports those students wanting to pursue technical school, a two- or four-year college, or the military. Aptly named, the translation of “ganas”is grit or desire to succeed, which is what our students embody.

On behalf of the UnidosNow students, parents, mentors, volunteers, staff, and Board, we appreciate all your support and the difference you’re making in so many people’s lives.

Please support UnidosNow during this Giving Challenge—from noon to noon on May 1st and 2nd—and help empower our students and their families. Stay tuned on May 1st at 12 p.m. when the donation link will be live to participate and donate during the 2018 Giving Challenge.

As in the past, thank you for your unselfish commitment. Together we can Be the One.

Celebrating our 2016 Giving Challenge Successes

giving_challenge_2016_thank_you_slider

What a thrilling Giving Challenge campaign we held in September! Thanks to the generous support of our friends, family, and the community, UnidosNow raised a total of $36,440, from 166 on- and off-line donations, that will help expand our college prep and access services for talented, hardworking, first generation, low income students who want to pursue higher education.

We started out the month on an a exciting note, having been one of 20 participating nonprofits selected to receive a $200 grant for the Best 2015 Giving Challenge Story. Then, UnidosNow collaborated with several new partners for this year’s Challenge, which made it that much more energizing! Our young professional committee volunteers led the charge for us to compete in the Millennial Challenge. Juan Arcila, Kelly Rodenas, and Carolina Saavedra organized outreach to young philanthropists, including a community event at the restaurant, Mi Pueblo, which graciously hosted us and donated 10% of proceeds to support our Giving Challenge campaign. As part of our goals for the Millennial Challenge, we will recruit young, new mentors to help conduct FAFSA workshops this year.

During this year’s Challenge, UnidosNow also partnered with the Ringling, which hosted a special tour of their GraphicStudio exhibit, Collaborating Across Borders, featuring Latin American artists, in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. The UnidosNow familia, including staff, board, volunteers, and students, enjoyed the event.

Osciel and Omar Urbina, two of our dynamic Future Leaders scholars, who are part of Manatee High’s jazz band, took their group to the Giving Challenge Donor Lounge and delighted the audience with their music. You can find it in our Facebook page.

We are also extremely proud of the Giving Challenge 2016 video that our Future Leaders Academy students created! If you didn’t have a chance to view it during the Challenge, we know you will enjoy watching the short video, here.

The UnidosNow DREAM team is so deeply grateful to each of our donors who made our 2016 Giving Challenge campaign such a tremendous success! Thank you! ¡Mil Gracias!

You Can Be The One to Students Like Tea

Tea_Binder

Congratulations to Tea Binder who was recently named a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist, which places her in the top 1% of all students in the country taking the 2015 PSAT.

Tea has participated in our Future Leaders Academy for the past two years and aspires to attend a top national university and eventually become a surgeon.

As a semi-finalist, Tea qualifies to compete for National Merit Scholarships to be awarded next spring. Good luck, Tea, we are all cheering for you!

UnidosNow is Engaging New Partners for the #GivingChallenge16

We are thrilled to have new partners participating in our Challenge campaign this year! Thanks to our young professional volunteer committee, we are competing in the Millennial Challenge.

Our dynamic Millennial team – Juan Arcila, with USF Sarasota-Manatee, and local attorneys Kelly Rodenas and Carolina Saavedra – are developing creative and techy ways to engage young people and encourage them to be part of this philanthropic opportunity. Here is the video they created to launch UnidosNow’s Millennial Challenge:

Stay tuned for details on the upcoming Millennial Challenge happy hour community event!

UnidosNow is also partnering with The Ringling to compete in the Giving Challenge’s Best Nonprofit Partnership contest. Both institutions value education and prioritize education programming and services as a primary part of their respective missions.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are collaborating to elevate the visibility of the contributions of Latinos and Latino Americans to the arts and culture of the U.S. The Ringling will host two events focused on their exhibit, Collaborating Across Borders, which features Latin American artists, to which UnidosNow will bring our familia – students, parents, mentors and supporters – to celebrate.

Be The One To Inspire a Student

Our talented scholars of the Future Leaders Academy inspire us to continue working from them -and for the generations to come- and guide them to dream big and reach high.

Our tremendous mentors inspire our students to find their passion, and to believe in themselves to accomplish their goals.

Our committed parents inspire all of us in the pursue of their American Dream.

During the Future Leaders Summer Academy, our students were asked to create a personal statement, a presentation of who they are, and what they want to achieve. METV joined UnidosNow during the closing ceremonies of our Rising Juniors and Rising Seniors classes, giving us the possibility of sharing with all of you their powerful stories and outstanding talents. With them, we wish to also inspire you.

Be the One to Inspire a Student: Be Part of the #GivingChallenge16!

Mark your calendars! UnidosNow will be part of the annual Giving Challenge, once again. We are counting on you – our friends and supporters – to help expand and enhance our programs through this 24-hour online giving event, from noon to noon on September 20 and 21.

One of the exciting aspects of the Giving Challenge this year is that all new donors (anyone who did not give to UnidosNow in 2015) will be matched two-to-one, and returning donors will be matched one-to-one, both up to $100.

This means YOU can Be The ONE to help our students DREAM BIG because your donation will have DOUBLE or TRIPLE the impact on our work and mission.

Example of how a donation to UnidosNow will be matched by The Patterson Foundation for a new donor:

So, we hope that you will visit www.givingpartnerchallenge.org between noon and noon, September 20 to 21, enter “UnidosNow” in the search box, and donate with your credit or debit card to qualify for a matched donation. (You can also be on the look-out, via our Facebook and Twitter, for the direct link to our donation page at the start of the Challenge.)

Your contribution will enable UnidosNow to reach more students at additional schools with expanded programming opportunities, such as facilitating students’ college visits and tours.

Imagine the possibilities. Be The One to inspire a student.

The 2016 Giving Challenge is presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, with giving strengthened by The Patterson Foundation, as well as support from Manatee Community FoundationJohn S. and James L. Knight FoundationWilliam G. and Marie Selby Foundation, and the Herald-Tribune Media Group.

This is what we accomplished last year. Will you join us this year? Giving Challenge 2016

FLA_College_Tour

The impact a visit to a college campus can have on a high-school student is unique. That experience can be the push they need to make up their minds. That experience can result in the discovery of their career. That time is the start of their future.

Unfortunately, many of the scholars we work with through our Future Leaders Academy have never had that chance before. Fortunately, thanks to the wondrous donors at the Giving Challenge 2015 our students lived this life-changing experience last spring.

The generous donations of our supporters during that challenge gave UnidosNow the chance to offer our Future Leaders a trip to these colleges: Southeastern University, University of Central Florida, Stetson University, and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

You can see more pictures and learn more about their experience, their emotions, and their whole trip here.

But that’s not the end of the story.

IMG_8691Our donors were an inspiration to the parents of our students. They wanted to share this important moment not only in the lives of their children, but in the lives of their whole families, because many of our students are the first to go to college in their families. And their parents didn’t want to miss the first time they stepped onto a college campus.

They knew UnidosNow didn’t have the resources to cover the expenses of their trip, so they rolled-up their sleeves, and spent a whole afternoon washing cars to raise funds to be able to chaperon their children’s college tour.

Thanks to our donors’ generosity we did not only inspire a student to go to college, but inspired parents to support their children in the next step of their life journey.

It took one to have an impact on the lives of these families last year, and that was YOU. Will you “Be The One” this year, too? Stay tuned to learn how to participate!
